The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan have shared diplomatic relations and common interests since the early 1970's. In 2002, Afghanistan appointed its Charged Affair' for re-establishing diplomatic relations and in 2004, His Excellency Abdul Farid Zikria was appointed as the first Ambassador to UAE. Thereafter, a bilateral exchange of land took place and Afghanistan was provided approximately 3 acres of land in Abu Dhabi's Diplomatic Embassy area, Section Number 44.

Following the planning and design stage for construction on the site, the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan allocated a generous budget to build one of its most prominent embassies in Abu Dhabi. On 24 August 2006 a contract was signed with Al-Diyar General Construction to initiate construction of the Embassy.

Today, the Afghanistan Embassy in Abu Dhabi is one of the largest Afghan embassies in the world. Close diplomatic relations between the United Arab Emirates and Afghanistan continues to flourish under His Excellency Ambassador Dr. Najibullah Mojadidi. The diplomatic mission aims to further develop and improve relations both politically and economically -- encouraging business, investment and a long term relationship.
